Preparation
- Begin by carefully cutting the apples in half and removing the cores. Peel the halves and carve whimsical faces.
- Mix 2 cups of water with 1 tablespoon of citric acid or ½ cup of lemon juice. Soak the carved apple heads in this mixture for about 5 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and place soaked apple heads on a baking sheet. Bake for approximately 3 hours.
- Raise the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and line a tart pan with the pie crust. Bake the crust for about 10 minutes.
- Once the crust has cooled, arrange the baked apple heads inside the shell. Fill gaps with walnuts, cranberries, and drizzle with honey or maple syrup.
- Place the tart back in the oven and bake for another 15-17 minutes.
