- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form into meatballs.
 - Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Cook meatballs for 6-8 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
 - In the same skillet, add onions and sugar. Cook on medium-low heat for 20-25 minutes until caramelized.
 - Pour in beef broth, scrape the skillet, and bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 minutes.
 - Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
 - Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the meatballs, cover, and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until melted.
