Description

Delicious Mediterranean Chicken Gyros served with a creamy feta tzatziki sauce, perfect for a flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large chicken breasts (about 1 pound), sliced into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 pita breads
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine olive oil, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add the sliced chicken and toss to coat. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator for more flavor.
  2. While the chicken is marinating, prepare the tzatziki sauce. In a mixing bowl, combine Greek yogurt, sour cream, lemon juice, dill, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt. Stir until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken strips and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  4. Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet or microwave for about 20 seconds until soft and pliable.
  5. To assemble the gyros, place a portion of the cooked chicken on each pita. Top with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce. Sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese.
  6. Roll up the pita to enclose the filling and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the chicken marinade or drizzle some hot sauce over the finished gyros.
  • You can substitute grilled vegetables like bell peppers and zucchini for a vegetarian option, or use lamb instead of chicken for a traditional gyro flavor.
